Summer 2014 News

Picnic:  June 26 @ 6:30pm  We start the summer off with a picnic at Kennekuk County Park's Hickory Hollow Shelter.  Plates, cups, and plastic ware will be provided. Bring a favorite covered dish to share. Don't forget to bring friends!! The more, the merrier. Click here for a map or visit VCCD's webpage on the park for directions more information about the park. May 2014 News

May 22nd presentation by Dave Weible Join us Thursday, May 22nd at 7:00 pm at the Danville Public Library to hear David Weible.  The event is free and open to the public. Snacks will be provided. Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in SW Florida is the subject of the May 22 program.  David and Diane Weible have been fortunate to visit this remarkable sanctuary during the past eight winters.  Corkscrew Sanctuary includes multiple habitats, of greatest importance being "the largest remaining tract of ancient bald cypress forest left in the world."  The story of the swamp and its wildlife will be shared in photos and spoken word.  Audubon has done and is doing important work in the world, with Corkscrew Sanctuary being one of our most beautiful jewels.

March 27th presentation by Dr. Joseph Spencer Join us Thursday, March 27th at 7:00 pm at the Danville Public Library to hear Dr. Joseph Spencer present “A ‘Taste’ of Loda Prairie”: Adventures with prairie cicadas and other insects. The event is free and open to the public. Snacks will be provided. Dr. Joseph Spencer will give an entomological talk based on his observations in local prairies, particularly Loda Cemetery Prairie Nature Preserve. Dr. Spencer is an entomologist and insect behaviorist from the Illinois Natural History Survey. His research interests include insect behavior and movement/dispersal of field crop insect pests. His approach to the study of insects is colored by an abiding interest in behavior and an appreciation for the constraints physiology can impose on behavior and pest adaptations. Dr. Spencer…
